You may not have heard (though let’s face it, you probably did…) but Mario Kart 8 got an update today. Normally these updates are small patches, fixing a bug here and there, but today’s update was different; Today’s update added a new 200cc mode.
Nintendo finally did it. They made Mario Kart even crazier than it already was.
For those of you who are new to Mario Kart, or new to automobiles in general, cc represents the size of an engine. The bigger the engine, the faster you can go and for years up until now Mario Kart has always been comprised of 50cc, 100cc and 150cc – each one acting as sort of a different difficulty level if you will, Easy, Normal and Hard respectively.
So, what is 200cc like you ask? Well, to be honest, it isn’t any harder than any of the others per se. It’s just faster; A lot faster. Opponents are smarter and items will also be a lot more plentiful, so you’ll be seeing a lot more shells.
To add this to mayhem, the second DLC pack was released today (although this one is going to cost you!) and it features, amongst 7 other race tracks, none other than BABY PARK. Arguably one of the best, and most chaotic maps in Mario Kart history, Mario Kart Double Dash’s Baby Park makes a triumphant return to our screens and alongside 200cc this track really is insane!
Increased Amiibo support was also added. Players can now unlock costumes for their Mii’s by placing certain Amiibos over the NFC point. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to look into this so I’m afraid I can’t add much more to this at this point. I’ll update this post once I know which Amiibos unlock what.
All in all, it’s a great update – and best of all it was FREE (200cc, that is). It’s really great to see Nintendo continuing to support this game so long after the original release.
You can find my review for the full game here! I reviewed it almost a year ago!
